Roosters, Pyrex and Park Lane

When you know you won’t be able to go to any yard sales, you need to find another outlet for your weekly thrift fix. That was the case last week for me. I knew yard sales were not in the cards for me, so I decided to check my local thrift during my lunch time.

I had gone looking for some potential purchases “spotted” by my good friend ‘S’. They didn’t work out, but I was not prepared to leave empty-handed. I found this sweet little green pyrex mixing bowl tucked inside a box filled with a dish set. The Boston Warehouse piggy chef spreaders are always so handy for daily use. I have a bowl filled to the brim with spreaders we use every day. I had spied the tiny turkey salt shaker on a previous visit and left him behind. Today, he jumped into my hands. The Nordic ware egg cooker is the second such device I have found. The first was for my daughter who highly recommends it for micro cooking of eggs. I’m giving this a try for those hurried workday morning breakfasts.

I also picked up this shelf. I just loved the colors of this and for $3.75 thought it was worth bringing home. Even it I end up painting it, it’s still a deal. It had the original HomeGoods price tag of $12.75 on it.

I think my favorite find of the day was this Royal Albert teacup in the Brigadoon design. I just love those precious thistles. This one required a good soaking to clean up the tea stains left behind and a good scrubbing all around. She’s good to go now and ready for a cup of tea and perhaps a shortbread cookie.

While on my way out the door from work, my friend ‘S’ texted me about some things she had spotted that day at the Salvation Army thrift store. Knowing that it was potentially a stop on my way home, she called to find out their closing time. She called me to let me know it was 6:00. It was already 5:37 when I was on the phone with her. I told her I couldn’t possibly make it in time. Well, the thrift fairy was with me as I tooled down the road. I decided I would try to make it before closing and amazingly I did! Boy, am I glad!

These green wine glasses are what ‘S’ had spotted for me. They were in a cardboard box and there were lots of them. They also had a larger compote/champagne size. I opted for the smaller size since I already have some Indiana Glass “Whitehall” green compotes. I picked up eight of these at .99 cents each. As best I can determine they were made by Colony Glass in their “Park Lane” design. I believe they may be quite similar to Imperial Glass’s Cape Cod design. See why I was so glad I made it before closing?

While the very friendly clerk, Lynda, cheerfully wrapped my glasses, I peeked around the corner at the dishes up front. Although it was very close to closing time, these dishes almost “flew” off the shelf and into my arms.

Is there such a thing as too many rooster plates? No, I didn’t think so. These are by Oneida in their “Morning Rooster” pattern. They were marked .99 each, but with the right color sticker for the day, they ended up at .49 each. I also found this plate while looking at the roosters.

This is by Wood and Sons and made in England. It’s blue and white transferware, what more can I say? Love that and it was only $1.99.

While I may not have gotten to any yard sales, my dish-spotting friend “S” kept me on track at the thrifts. It was a very good week. Now I’m off to find a place for all these goodies….

Memorial Day Weekend 2011

I just love red, white and blue. It may have something to do with being born close to Independence Day.  🙂

A special thanks to those who have served in our military and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we might be free today. And thanks to those who protect us today so that we can continue to be free. God Bless America and her military sons and daughters!

This was a quick set up as we decided at the last minute to have a cookout for our daughter and her boyfriend. My husband made his first barbecued chicken of the season. It was fabulous!

I used my Ruby Red Goblets and also my blue water glasses from Fortessa. We enjoyed vanilla ice cream with Mrs. Richardson’s Butterscotch Sauce in the Ruby Reds. They were perfect for this delicious and refreshing dessert. The table covering is from Kohl’s as are the coordinating napkins. The blue-handled flatware is a Walmart purchase from a few years ago.

The square blue-rimmed dinner plate is also made by Fortessa.

Atop this is a square red plate by Corsica purchased at Kohl’s several seasons ago.

The small plate with blue band and white stars by Totally Today is a recent Salvation Army Thrift find, thanks to my dish-spotter, ‘S’. She knows I love stars.

Lastly is the little star shaped dish which was quite handy to use for extra home-made barbecue sauce for dipping. These were also a thrift find.

We had a very nice time visiting and enjoying the first barbecued chicken of our grilling season. I hope your weekend was filled with fun, too.

This week I hope to join Marty’s Table Top Tuesday at A Stroll Thru Life, and Susan’s Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch.

Vintage Flowers on China and Linens

I tell you it is a great thing when your friends “spot” for you at thrift shops! “S” was doing some lunchtime thrifting when she spotted some lovely dishes for me. She told me exactly where they were located in the store. So I headed that direction during my lunch hour. I walked by them twice before I saw them! Thank goodness “S” has better spotting skills than I do. I never would have seen them if I hadn’t really been looking for them.

The box included four cups, saucers, salad/dessert plate, and napkin rings. There are four different designs: Corn Marigold, Texas Bluebonnet (shown above), Cyclamen, and Bird’s Foot Violet. They are each edged in gold. They are From the Private Collection of Georges Briard, the Victorian Garden. I just fell in love with them and feel very fortunate that “S” is so willing to spot and share. This whole set cost only $7.75.

While I was looking for these adorable dishes, I ran across some pretty blue plates, really chargers, made by Land’s End. I got a set of four for $4.75.

I also found six yellow napkins ($2.00) and a candle stand like one I already have (pairs are better, yes?) for $2.50.

Limited time on Saturday meant we (the Scottish Terriers accompanied us) couldn’t get to as many yard sales as if we had all the time in the world. Of course, there are always lots of sales when you can’t get to them. Isn’t that always the way?

We  stopped at a few before I found something worth bringing back to the car. My first find was very exciting for me as I have been searching and searching for a Scrabble game just about everywhere. I found one at a very unlikely sale for $2. I picked up the little protectors for 25 cents.

The next sale we went to was a fundraiser. I try to make those as I feel they are win/win. I can contribute to a good cause and hopefully get a bargain as well. I was lucky today, I found this glass candleholder for $1.00. The extra wax that came with it cleaned up nicely. 🙂

Our last good sale of the day was well-signed (usually a good “sign” – no pun intended). It was a large sale with great parking. Love that! I found a little frame with possibilities (25 cents) and five pieces of vintage embroidered runners for $1.75. I was very, very happy with my $2 purchases.

Each of the above pieces was 25 cents each. Can you believe it? The ones following were 50 cents each.

Not bad for a short day of yard saling!

I hope to join the parties at Apron Thrift Girl’s Thrift Share Monday, Flea Market Finds at Her Library Adventures, Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays at Coastal Charm, Thrifty Thursday at Tales from Bloggeritaville, Treasure Hunt Thursday at Blue Creek Home and  Thrifty Things Friday at The Thrifty Groove.

It’s the Bees Knees

When my daughter gave me a beautiful glass bee skep shaped drink dispenser for Mothers’ Day, I knew it would have to be featured in a tablescape.

I rounded up some other bee-utiful items I had to accent this piece.

This little bee-lidded jam pot was a gift from a dear friend, many, many, many years ago.I found these little honeycomb candles at a recent yardsale. Aren’t the little bees precious?

This little Miel honey pot was also a yard sale purchase. The bee runner was made from some fabric in my fabric stash.

Here is the bee detail from my Frenchy glasses. I love, love, love them. Next we will see how the place setting came to be.

All the dishes, napkins and place mats were either yard sale or thrift purchases except the sunflower plates. They were purchased at Cracker Barrel. The flatware is a new purchase from Tuesday Morning.

A fellow dish lover gifted me with the two gorgeous cut glass flower shaped bowls holding the beeswax candles. Thanks so much, Paige! I sat them on cobalt blue dipping plates which match the cobalt flower vases which are just waiting for some flowers to complete this table.

I’m looking forward to making a big batch of sweet iced tea to fill this bee skep drink dispenser. There will be plenty so I hope you will stop by to join me.

This week I hope to join Marty’s Tabletop Tuesday at A Stroll Thru Life, and Susan’s Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch.

Eagles Soar Above the Rest – Yard Sales and a Surprise Gift

Most of the sales I attended this past week were held by organizations. We first stopped by a local church sale where I found some bright melamine plates that will be perfect to use for dining on the deck, Christmas sticky notes and stationery in unopened packages, and two opened coffee filter packages. All for $5 which is a little higher than I would have paid, but it was a benefit for the local church, so I went with it.

And I bet you are wondering what in the world I will do with those coffee filters…they are not going in the coffee pot but between plates to help protect them when stacked.

Before leaving town we headed to a private sale. The older couple was selling their long-time home and clearing out. Not much of interest for a dish lover, but I did find some old and interesting books. I’m a book lover, too.

They were well-loved and well-read as you can see. I loved the illustrations in the Night Before Christmas and in the Shirley Temple book. The Pilgrims Party has interesting line drawings. I think I will make back my 30 cents if I decide to resell any of these, don’t you?

We headed out of town for a local high school’s boys’ soccer team sale. Their books were also well-priced, but I really only bought one to help the cause and because I have read this author who co-writes with James Patterson. Since I was planning my next tablescape  in my head, I zeroed in on the beeswax candles with tiny bees on top.

Aren’t those little bees the cutest? You’ll see again them soon. $1.50 total spent.

Ater leaving this sale we headed toward our last sale of the day. Okay, let me just say that I had to carry my first load out to the car and then head back in for more shopping. Yes, the Eagles’ club sale was a very good one. We also ran into some very good long-time friends we hadn’t seen in a while. It was a very nice surprise.

I picked up three dvds and two sweet little storybooks. Three pieces of fabric with palm trees, dragon flies and pink flowers. I thought my daughter would love these designs which reminded me of her favorite, Lily Pulitzer. If not, I see some napkins and table coverings in their future.

I found a Wilton Minnie Mouse cake pan. This one will definitely make it to the reseller list!

I picked up a box full of clear glass plates and bowls with an embossed flower design and eight shell-shaped clear glass dishes. I got a paper bag full of napkins for $2 and then in my second run I picked up another eight white napkins with a flower in the corner.

I can’t resist an interesting cookbook so I picked up these two to add to my collection. I like to read cookbooks, especially those produced by service groups as fundraisers. The Good Cookin’ from the Heart of Virginia has some lovely paintings featured at the beginning of each chapter. Please forgive my blurry pictures. Between no sun and a camera on strike, many of my pictures are not what I would prefer them to be.

This little monkey looked like something my husband would appreciate. For 75 cents, he had to come home, too. I thought he could hold business cards; my friend said he might make a good soap holder. A square candle would look pretty cool, too. Any ideas?

When we were done monkey-ing around, we headed to do some serious errands. We stopped by one of the coolest shops around so that I could pick out some new glasses. My eyes are just not lovin’ contacts like they used to. This shop has fabulous jewelry, purses, totes, and all kinds of wonderfulness. It was hard to stay focused on the task at hand with all the temptations around. The owner is also a dish lover and having read my blog had a special gift for me, presented in the shop’s signature cool gift bags.

It was much nicer looking when originally presented and before I unwrapped and wrapped again. I don’t have the touch that some do when it comes to gift presentation. When I unwrapped, I found these lovelies inside….

The prettiest crystal flower shaped bowls. These babies are heavy, let me tell you. Aren’t they gorgeous! This was such a fun treat to receive! Thanks, Paige! I am planning to use them in my upcoming tablescape so look for them there.

This was a day full of treasures, both tangible and intangible.

I hope to join the parties at Apron Thrift Girl’s Thrift Share Monday, Flea Market Finds at Her Library Adventures, Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays at Coastal Charm, Thrifty Thursday at Tales from Bloggeritaville, and  Thrifty Things Friday at The Thrifty Groove.

Dish Days at the Thrifts

This was a banner week at the thrift shops for finding dishes. I had the opportunity to visit several thrifts I haven’t been to in a while. At the first thrift, I found some books, pattern books, and two bags of Colonial Blue candles.

While checking out I spied a set of Boopie champagne goblets. When I asked the clerk for the price, he couldn’t find it so he said 3 for $1. I said, I’ll take them. Then as he was bringing them to the counter, the price tag was visible. It was a little more than $2. They were six for $8.25. I still took them as I felt that was a fair price, too.

Here they are lined up on my hutch. The glass in the center is also a Boopie, but a smaller size. You’ll notice that there are actually seven larger glasses; I had one lonely Boopie champagne who is lonely no longer.

I then stopped by the local Salvation Army. My trick is not to pick up a cart. If I don’t, I usually find an armful of goodies. If I get a cart, I find nothing. Here are the goodies I was carrying around until I finally broke down and got a cart. 🙂

The plates are Casino Royale by American Atelier. After I picked them up, I knew I had to circle around and get those poker chips, too. The clerk was delighted I got them as she was sure they were going to end up all over the floor after some unsupervised child found them. I hope to remove the spike from the candle urn as I feel it will be much more useful without it. The two architectural pieces I found too interesting to leave behind. The green spiral is quite heavy. It may have to have a paint job, though, I’m not quite sure about that yet.

The candy dish matches one I already have. A pair is always better, right? The little wire basket is decorated with daisies and was too cute to leave behind at just 99 cents. The wire plate hanger will help me to display (store) some of my finds.

Sometimes it’s a good thing to wait in line. While waiting I noticed some blue spheres which looked like gazing balls. After I paid I went over to check them out; they turned out to be giant ornaments and not gazing balls, but while in that corner I spied some dishes on display. I had no idea they had dishes in that corner! After I took my first purchases to the car, I came back to take a closer look at these vintage sweeties:

I’d been wanting to make a cake stand using a candlestick and here was one already done for me for only $4.99.  There were also eight tiny dessert plates (actually bread and butter plates, I think, but I’m calling them tiny dessert plates) for 99 cents each.

They are Homer Laughlin Eggshell Georgian L52N5. Oh so worth the trip back in and standing in line again. Isn’t the design so sweet? The edge band is a beautiful pastel green.

My last stop was at one of my favorite china outlets. I went looking for some Schott Zwiesel wine glasses for a bridal shower I’m attending soon. While there I just had to pick up something for myself; it just wouldn’t be right not to.

I love these cobalt blue items. The test-tube looking pieces are bud vases. The two trays are dipping trays, but I think they would look great with little votives.  I

also picked up some square dipping dishes, which I use frequently around the house and in my tablescapes. See them in action in my upcoming tablescape featuring this bee skep drink dispenser.

Oh, I also made it to some yard sales this weekend, too. I plan to post about the cool stuff I found later this week.

Honey of a Mother’s Day Gift

My sweet daughter remembered that I had admired the totally adorable bee skep beverage dispensers that were showing up in blogs last year. She surprised me with a Mother’s Day gift of this very same item. I am tickled pink and all abuzz with this honey of a gift. I can’t wait to feature it in an upcoming tablescape.

Isn’t it too adorable? I love it and my sweet daughter for remembering how much I wanted one. Stop by soon to see the bee skep featured on my table.

I am linking up with Laurie for A Few of My Favorite Things Saturday and Marty for  Tabletop Tuesday.

Milk Glass and Acorns

It’s fun to thrift in fresh territory! We had a reunion with long-time friends in another part of our state this past weekend. While there, I decided it would be a terrible waste not to explore some of the thrifts in their area.

First a stop at the Goodwill. While some bloggers have had great experience with their local Goodwill, I have not. I was hoping that this far out of town Goodwill would turn out to be a thrifter’s Shangri La. No such luck. I did find two white glass compotes which I think my friend “S” will like and a light blue placemat with two sweet embroidered bunnies in the corner for my Easter decorating next year. I left the store having spent less than $2. Not Shangri La, but not bad.

I managed to find another thrift in this same town. We headed over there only to find out that I had ten minutes to shop before closing. Ten minutes, are you kidding? They had lots I wanted to see, but with only ten minutes I had to be lightning fast. I spotted these three small acorn containers immediately.

I continued to look around, quickly, time was tickin’ and on my last fast sweep I spotted two milk glass snack plates sans their cups. No price sticker so I asked the very friendly clerk for the price. She said 75 cents each. Okay, “S”, you’ve got yourself two very pretty and heavy milk glass snack plates.

Back to the acorn containers. I asked the clerk for the price on them; she said 1.25 for all three. Okay, self, you have three very cute acorn containers for a future fall-themed tablescape.

So, for a very quick trip through the thrift isles, I did find some cute things at very reasonable prices. I had hoped to get back there the following day for a more thorough inspection; however, we were busy visiting with long-time friends who had gathered from around the country and that was the all-time best way to spend a weekend!

Cosmos Cake Plate Inspired May Day Tablescape

When I found this darling Cosmos Cake Stand at a recent yard sale, I knew she would want to be featured in the center of a tablescape. I gathered some of the other flowers in my stash of dishes and this tablescape was born.

Here she is peeking out from among the candles.

All the candlesticks are thrift or yard sale purchases. The candles (including the wonky one) were a recent thrift purchase. Also joining the center are two delicate Coalport ceramic floral pieces and a Wedgwood ceramic heart box in the Wild Strawberry design.

I used thrifted green placemats as a base for the placesetting. I pulled out the Villery and Boch white dishes purchased from Fortessa, topped them with the Bordallo Pinheiro green cabbage leaf plates (Marshalls), and finally with Dansk “Floating Leaves” plates which were a Dansk outlet purchase. Oh, how I miss that store!

Each of the salad plates features a different flower in the center and a delicate raised design around the edge.

I used my mother’s silver again. It is the pattern Lyric by Gorham.

The ramekins are by Royal Worcester in the Astley design. There are two different flowers featured on each side of the Ramekin. These are another recent thrift store purchase.

You will also see that the bees have come to join the flowers. These glasses are Napoleon Bee by LaRochere. They were a Macy’s purchase, on sale. So many of you ‘scapers have these darling glasses and I admired them over and over. I finally got my own set and I love them.

Each setting has its own vintage porcelain placecard with delicate flowers coordinating with the salad plate. I haven’t written the guests’ names yet. Will you join us?

The porcelain placecards match the porcelain menu stand. The menu is still being decided so no dishes have yet been added. These vintage porcelain sweeties were a find at a local women’s club sale.

Here are some other views of this Cosmos Cake Plate inspired tablescape. I hope you enjoy them.

I hope to join Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch and Debbiedoo’s Newbie Party.

Stuff Goes Out and Treasures Come In

This was another great thrifting and yard sale week. Friday the weather was nice and I had time to run by the thrift shop on my lunch hour. I walked out with a box of nice white taper candles, a plate stand (these are great for plate storage or this), and five Royal Worcester Fine Porcelain Astley pattern ramekins.

The ramekins have different flower designs on each side; blue on one side and purplish-pink on the other. They are so delicate looking yet are supposed to be oven to tableware. You won’t believe that I paid only 75 cents per piece, but it’s true. Aren’t they pretty?

Saturday I spent half my day having a yard sale rather than visiting yard sales. I must say that I much prefer buying at yard sales rather than holding my own. This one was more fun than usual because it was a community yard sale which included a fund raiser for a local Boy Scout troop. My friend ‘S’ invited me to join her in the sale. My husband was overjoyed because the sale was in someone else’s yard – the community center’s.

I forgot to take a picture of our stuff. Probably just as well. We don’t want any evidence of our former accumulations around as reminders for our husbands. ‘S’ did very well and sold most of her items. My high dollar item was a Kathy VanZeeland purse I sold for my daughter. I did manage to get rid of several boxes of little things, too.

With all the other sale tables beckoning, we really had to check them out (several times), if only to stretch our legs (you buying that excuse?).  There was an interesting mix of crafts, antiques, food (cupcakes!), and pricing strategies. The Boy Scouts had a massive amount of items from the donations they received for the sale.

My first scan of their numerous tables was just cursory. I reported back to ‘S’ with items of interest. She went on her first scan, which I must say was a good selling technique for her because every time she tried to leave to go check out another seller, she would get one or more customers. She returned and told me about some things I might be interested in. I headed back over to investigate and ended up with several vhs walking tapes, walking cds, walking dvd (sense a theme here?), a movie dvd, a book for my husband, and two “books that looks like nothing”.  At this point I was actually $9.50 in the red. Oops.

Several bags of freshly popped complimentary popcorn and cups of lemonade later, (small town charm, you just can’t beat it), I headed back for another look-see at the Scouts’ stuff. They had been busy selling all day, but still had some treasures left. I picked up some carved serving utensils featuring rhinos for ‘S’ to use in weaving an interesting basket. She’s multi-talented and can do stuff like that. Then I found a box of three Nicholas Square Snowmen snack plates for $1. I have a thing for snowmen and these match some little bowls I already have.

I also found a box of six Pottery Barn Snowflake napkin rings, in their box, for $1.

Each one is a little different, just like snowflakes.

This next item had a magnetic pull. I tried to resist and actually did walk away from it once.

I knew I would regret not buying this Cosmos Cake Stand designed by Nanette Vachos for Ambiance Collections for $2.

Not one to live with regrets, I picked this cutie up as well. She is featured in my upcoming tablescape, so stop back by to see her as the center of attention.

It was a great way to spend the beautiful day. ‘S’ and I had fun; I saw one of my nieces and her sweet little daughter which is always a treat; I sold some stuff that no longer takes up space in my house; and I found some cool stuff to bring home.

Some stuff goes out and some treasures come home. That’s a good week.

I hope to join the parties at Apron Thrift Girl’s Thrift Share MondayFlea Market Finds at Her Library Adventures, Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays at Coastal Charm, Thrifty Thursday at Tales from Bloggeritaville, and  Thrifty Things Friday at The Thrifty Groove.
