Familiar Faces and Places

One thing about going to yard sales on a regular basis,  you sometimes see familiar faces. We stopped at a yard sale and it immediately brought me back to one year ago when the same woman had another yard sale. Last year I didn’t buy anything from her, but her neighbor had some snowman dishes that were just perfect for my friend “S” and her newly started collection. This year, I bought these at her yardsale.

The glass refrigerator containers were hard to pass up for $4. The little handled gravy/sauce container was too pretty to leave behind. She said it was from the 40’s. I can’t identify the pattern. Does anyone know about this type of dish?

One of my favorite shops was having a big sale, part of which included a yard sale of items. I found these lovelies there.

The blue flower was actually a ponytail holder. I think I can work it into a necklace.

Another sale had these brass sconces. I thought the design on them was interesting and for yard sale prices I can paint them should I decide to do so and feel no pain. The Halloween spreaders are for my daughter who loves everything Halloween.

A sale advertised as “huge” turned out to be not so huge. I did find a Wilton pumpkin cake pan for my Halloween lovin’ daughter and a heart picture/note holder.

A local high school’s band was having a huge yard sale and their sale really was huge. I managed to find some treasures there as well.  The best part was everything was half-off by the time I stopped. It was a super hot day and we had our Scotties along so I had to do a quick scan and shop since they were quite ready to head home to the air-conditioning.

The vintage metal picnic basket has seen better days, but was too cute to pass up. The two cheese domes will one day be transformed into something special courtesy of the wonderful ideas I have seen in blogland. The amber swan was so sweet and priced just right to come home with me. When I saw the box of German vocabulary words, it reminded me I need to brush up on my German. Maybe I will choose a few cards each day to help me practice.

I found some interesting vintage jewelry and another lidded Atlas canning jar all for just $4 at a yard sale just down the street. I’m particularly fond of the earrings with the crown design. I hope I can find a cute way to repurpose them.

We did a lot of traveling this day from sale to sale stopping at some familiar places. It was a fun day with lots of treasures found.

I hope to join the parties at Flea Market Finds at Her Library Adventures, Apron Thrift Girl’s Thrift Share Monday, Thrifty Treasures at Southern Hospitality, Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays at Coastal Charm, Thrifty Thursday at Tales from Bloggeritaville, and  Thrifty Things Friday at The Thrifty Groove.

Hint of Nautical

I wanted to change up the table a little bit for this week still using some of my beachy items. I have this china which always makes me think of a yacht when I see it. Not that I’ve been on many yachts (if any) or know what china they might use. It’s the rope-like edge design which puts me in mind of something nautical.

This china was a great buy at one of my favorite outlets, Fortessa. They have sales several times each year where they open up their warehouse section. I have taken advantage of these sales on more than one occasion.

I used the rattan chargers to give a more relaxed and organic feel.

I am once again using my blue workhorse napkins. They are placed under fish-shaped dishes that were thrifted.

The blue goblet and Boopie glasses round out the place setting.

I carefully unwrapped the large sand dollars my daughter brought me from the beach and added them to the smaller sand dollars and starfish.

To add to the beach feel, I included two lanterns and placed them on star decorated dishes.

The centerpiece is a thrifted platter on which I have placed the Pyrex baby bottles I found at a recent yard sale. Lacking any nautical flags, I used good ol’ American flags to display. I never tire of seeing them.

I hope you enjoyed this peek at my Hint of Nautical tablescape.

Ratan Chargers: Wal-mart

Dinner Plate: One of the Eschenbach U.S.A designs by Fortessa

Fish Plate: thrifted

Blue goblet: Fortessa

Boopies: thrifted and gifted

Napkins: from my napkin stash

Flatware: Reed & Barton, don’t remember pattern name

Center platter: J&G Meakin, Classic White, thrifted

Pyrex baby bottles: yard sale

Lanterns: yard sale

Star edged plates: Totally Today, thrifted

I hope to join the parties at Diann’s Thrifty Tablescape Party, Marty’s Tabletop Tuesday and Susan’s Tablescape Thursday.

I did it for Peanuts

I had just had a conversation with a co-worker who wanted to tag along with me to the local thrift store one day at lunch. It put me in the mood to make a stop there, although it doesn’t take much to do that. I rounded the corner into the back room and this was sitting front and center.

A giant Snoopy with a bag of Woodstocks on his way to make deliveries for Christmas. He is encased in a giant plastic dome. According to the box, it lights up and snows, too.

Now here is the conundrum: my co-worker loves Snoopy as do I. If she had accompanied me, would we have had a wrestling match over this Snoopy globe? Quite possibly. I may use this to decorate my work area during the holidays so then we will both be able to enjoy it.

I lugged Snoopy back to the other room where I found these two beauties.

They are from the Winter Greetings series by Lenox. These mugs feature the Cedar Waxwing and the Dark-eyed Junko.

On Friday I had taken a vacation day to have some heavy things hauled away from the house. I can highly recommend 123Junk as they did an excellent job. I noticed earlier in the week that there were three yard sales advertised for Friday. I could hardly contain my excitement. We rarely have yard sales on Friday around here and all three of these were in my small town! After the guys hauled away some junk, I went in search of more.

The first sale was called an estate sale. I don’t have much luck at these and this one was no different. The first yard sale wasn’t much either. Lucky for me, the third one was the charm. I did the Snoopy dance of joy and you will see why.

This is a jack-in-the box Snoopy. Be still my heart. You can see that he was well loved; he needs a little clean up but he still works just fine.

There was also a table full of Hallmark Snoopy ornaments, in their boxes. I took my time picking out just a few to bring home.

Later that day when my husband got home and I told him about the table full of ornaments (most of which I had left behind), he encouraged me to return to the sale. What a guy! We hopped in the car and headed back to the sale just across town. Almost all of the ornaments were still there! I loaded up my box with Snoopy ornaments and a few Star Wars, too.

Who can resist this sweet character? Not me.

I ended up paying almost peanuts for Peanuts. It was a great day!

Thrifty Success

I had another successful week of thrifting and yard sales. My latest lunchtime thrift visit prompted me to go back the next day. On the first day of shopping, I found a Scrabble game and bought it, because in my book, one cannot have too many Scrabble games. The wooden tiles are going to enhance one of my apothecary jars in the near future.

Someone must have donated their lovely teapot collection. There were many pretty teapots on the shelves. I was drawn to the sturdy white teapot which will work well with the cobalt blue teapot I found last week. She is a World Market teapot and needed a bit of a soak and scrub; now she is as good as new at less than one third the price of new ($2.75).

I spied a wee copper pan that I had passed on the week before. Happy that no one else had taken it home, I decided to grab it for $1.50. It doesn’t have any markings so I doubt it is valuable, but it is a nice size small pan so we will give it a try.

I got a little bag full of curtain clips decorated with leaf shapes. I’m not sure if I’m going to paint these a different color or not. That was my initial thought. For $1.75 they might be worth a little effort. I also found a smallish sliding baby gate that will be perfect to take to the beach later this year. When you have Scottish terrors, I mean terriers, sliding baby gates come in very handy. I usually pick these up if they are in good condition.

I found a mint julep glass from the 2008 Kentucky Derby. This still has the sticker of authenticity on the glass bottom. I felt this was a bargain for 75 cents. I spied four 2011 Preakness glasses but they stayed on the shelf.

That evening I thought more and more about those Preakness glasses. My husband said I should have gotten them. One of our friends wrote the music for this year’s jingle and I could gift them to him. There were also some little Starbucks mugs I liked, but didn’t buy. So the next day, I stopped by again intent on getting these items. Sadly, the Preakness glasses were gone. Happily, the little Starbucks mugs were there and are now mine all mine.

While there I also found a box of lemons which are also a nice vase or apothecary jar filler. This box cost $2.75 which I thought was reasonable for instant décor. A box of autumn cookie cutters from HomeGoods was next into my basket. The little squirrel and acorn cookie cutters were too cute to leave behind for 75 cents. Maybe I can get my daughter to make some cookies with them?

I also got a box of new and in the box hooks made by Henn Workshops in their Provence design.  They were a bit of a splurge for me at $7.75, but still a good deal since they retail for $20.

On Saturday morning the skies were threatening rain and there were a few drops on the windshield but we headed out to see what treasures were to be found. We had guest riders, too, as my daughter and her puppy accompanied us. The first few sales we stopped at were great if you were searching for kids’ clothes and toys. I left empty-handed from these.

I was excited to stop at a sale in the next town over which advertised interesting vintage items. She really had a nice display of her vintage and antique things. Unfortunately, there were boxes that hadn’t yet been unpacked. I did rummage through one of them, but had the “pickers” literally hovering over my shoulders. This was too uncomfortable for me, almost like having buzzards watching over you. I gathered the items I had already found and checked out.

The old puzzles were in interesting old boxes. The larger one is complete while the smaller one is missing a piece or two.

I loved this little wooden puzzle of Dwarfs made in Holland. Something about the illustration made me decide to pay $3 for this.

I picked up another Wilton cake pan. This one looks like Raggedy Ann. We had a discussion about a lamb cake the seller made which her husband thought looked like a dog. He found a picture of it on his phone and showed me. She did an admirable job, but it did look a little like a Bichon.

Oh there were so many wonderful paper things here: old matchbooks, old religious pamphlets, Masonic pamphlets, magazines, etc. I could have stayed all day looking at these items. I did pick up a vintage Santa advertisement a savings and loan used to encourage folks to open a Christmas club account.

I also made a donation to a homeless animal fund and got a yummy brownie in return. I thought about a return stop later in the day, but then the rains came and that idea was washed away.

Our last stop at a well-signed yard sale found two granddaughters selling their Granny’s goodies. I bought a sweet wooden storage box for flour, sugar, coffee and tea for $3. Also coming home with me for $2 were owl salt and pepper shakers marked Japan on their bottoms, but missing their stoppers, and a Nancy Drew mystery I don’t think I have, so for a quarter, I took the chance. These were some very friendly ladies. I definitely hit the jackpot of friendly folks today.

More Blue? It’s True!

So what does one do when there were no yard sales to attend the previous weekend? Why, go lunch time thrifting, of course! Seriously, if my lunchtime thrift shop should ever move, I’d be heartbroken!

I saw this tiny cobalt blue cream pitcher on the shelf and knew that for 75 cents, it was coming on home with me. It turns out to be by Diversified Ceramics  and is called a Ranch Creamer, #35, 5 1/2 ounce Cobalt creamer. I love the color.

I also happened upon two very sticky blue and white transfer plates. The first is Melody by Myott and the other Harmony House Wisteria. They were also 75 cents each. A little soak and some scrubbing and they now look much happier.

The white ceramic shell napkin rings were just a perfect addition to my collection. I have been trying to find more thrifted classic beachy items to add to my stash. I realized that I was lacking items in this decorating theme and so I am attempting to correct that. These were a deal for $1.75, don’t you think?

Another sweep of the shelves and this cobalt blue teapot appeared. Most days at this thrift they are constantly putting new things on the shelf so you really do have check them twice (or more) depending on how long you’ve been shopping. There are no markings on this little gal, but her color and shape are what drew me to her. She does go nicely with the little creamer, too. She was a bit pricey for me at $5.75. I reasoned that she is one of my favorite colors and will get along very well with so many of my blue and white dishes. Plus, she’s a real workhorse; this gal can serve some hot tea and that’s for sure.

Percolating in my wee brain is a tea scape using the Curious George tea set I picked up earlier (here). I have been looking for a Curious George book, but to no avail. This week I found an ornament and still in the box no less. There was no doubt that for 75 cents this guy was heading home with me.

After checking me out, the very sweet clerk, Diana, asked me if while shopping I had seen some really pretty napkins with rings? Why, no, I did not. She thought I would love them, so she volunteered to show me their location. She found two cream napkins with beaded napkin rings, but she thought there were more so I could dig around for them. Well dig I did, but none showed up. I had that pesky thing called Work to get back to so I had to give up the search. I did purchase these and Diana said she would let me know if she found any others. Can’t beat that kind of service!

And lest you think I only shop for myself (well, mostly I do), I did find an All-Clad 3 quart colander/strainer for my daughter as well as another Pyrex pie plate. Yeppers, that strainer set me back $1.75. Not bad when it retails new at over $50. Did I tell you that I just love to shop the thrifts?

Roosters Come Out to Play

It’s time for Sheila at Note Songs’, Heart of the Home Party – Roosters and Chickens – and my roosters wanted to join the party. I am sharing some photos of two rooster-themed tablescapes I set BB (Before Blog).

The first table was set with rooster plates I found at a thrift shop. I really love the roped effect on the plate edges.

My good old blue napkins are pressed into service once again as are the blue goblets from Fortessa. This little rooster is singing his heart out to all who will listen.

The centerpiece was simple. I used a wooden vase filled with sunflowers, Momma Hen and her chicks, and the proud rooster and his mobile friend along with some thrifted iron candle stands.

Here is a closer look at Momma Hen and her sweet chicks. She flew into my cart one day while I was shopping at Home Goods. Her vintage look was something I could not leave behind.

And here is a closer look at the mobile rooster. I was fortunate to find him for a song at a yard sale.

This next table was set using some rooster plates I found at Marshalls. I love the bright colors in these square dishes.

I used a thrift store red dinner plate to anchor the rooster dinner plate on the blue placemat. To add a little interest I added a sunflower bowl from Cracker Barrel.

I used the glasses my mother-in-law gifted me one birthday as well as the generous coffee mug which matches the rooster design.

There are those workhorse blue napkins again!

Do you want a closer look at the rooster plate so you can read its message?

I believe this rooster is welcoming you to the day with a multi-lingual good morning call.

In addition to Sheila’s Heart of the Home party, I also plan to join Susan’s Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch.

Thrifty Gifts

A late start due to morning appointments and a hot day added up to very little yard sale shopping opportunity. The drought in sales led me to follow signs for one sale which I never could find. The only other sale I happened upon would have been great if I was searching for kid stuff, but I wasn’t. I did find leaf-shaped candles which will be useful in future tablescapes, I’m sure.

My wonderful friends, however, have kept me supplied with thrifty gifts to share. Keeping in-line with fall-themed tablescapes, “S” found an adorable acorn adorned spreader. She also gifted me with this sweet candlewick plate. I believe it may have lived its life as an ashtray at some point, but no more. It will be a very welcome addition to my collection with multiple use possibilities.

One of my blog-reading co-workers came upon an Avon American Heirloom series bowl in the Independence Day pattern and decided to gift it to me. The sweet flowers on this bowl are charming. I’m sure we will see this in a future vignette or tablescape. The little dragonfly appears again on the inside of the bowl; so sweet. Thanks, “DH”!

This next thrifty gift had me squealing with delight. After spying one of these in an antique store for a not-so-thrifty price and deciding to pass, “S” found this in our favorite lunchtime thrift and grabbed it up for me.

I had never seen one of these before. From what I can learn, it is a little glass creamer that was given away as a premium in Post Grape Nuts back in the 1930’s. This one has a number 23 on his underside. Isn’t he just the cutest thing? I love him and am so thankful to have a generous friend with a great thrifting eye. Thanks, “S”!!

Yard sales may have been few this particular week, but thanks to my friends and their thrifty gifts I had a spectacular week.

I hope to join the parties at Flea Market Finds at Her Library Adventures, Apron Thrift Girl’s Thrift Share Monday, Today’s Thrifty Treasures at Southern Hospitality, Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays at Coastal Charm, Thrifty Thursday at Tales from Bloggeritaville, and  Thrifty Things Friday at The Thrifty Groove, and The Penny Worthy Project at Hey, What’s for Dinner Mom?

Summer Luncheon

When our daughter called to say she and her boyfriend wanted to come by to visit with their new Scottie puppy, we were delighted. We decided to have a casual lunch together.

I had been thinking about a beach-themed table setting. I decided to pull out the lovely starfish and sand dollars (my favorite!) brought back from the beach as a gift from our daughter last year.

I used my rattan chargers, topped with a tropical floral design on a melamine dinner plate. Don’t pass up those “plastic” dishes at yard sales and thrifts if they have an interesting design.

I then layered a blue salad plate with a shell shaped dish topping the dish stack. Both of these are thrift finds.

Our centerpiece was a simple gathering of empty apothecary jars. I can just imagine them filled with assorted shells, can’t you? I also like the clean look of the empty jars. These apothecary jars are all thrifty finds as are the twisted stem glass candle holders

The glasses were a birthday gift from my sweet mother-in-law. I believe she found them at Target. The napkins and stainless are from my collection.

We had a very simple lunch of pulled pork barbecue on potato rolls, deviled eggs, cucumbers and onions with an Asian twist, and caramel apple salad.

The new puppy just settled himself under the table and was good as gold through the whole meal as we enjoyed our lunch and spending time together.

I hope to join the parties at The Thrifty Groove’s Thrifty Tablescape Party, Between Naps on the Porch for Tablescape Thursday, and StoneGable’s On The Menu Monday.
